Guide to Getting a College Scholarship - For
Parents
Obtaining a College Scholarship for one of your children can significantly
reduce the financial burden of getting college educations for all
your children.
Most parents start college funds as soon as their children are
born, and spend a lifetime saving only to find the cost of a college
degree has escalated beyond their means.
The various payments needed for your children’s college education
includes:
- College application
- Scholastic assessment test expenditures
- Transcript of records
All before the child even starts!!! Add that the cost of education,
lodging and food allowance and other expenses and the cost can be
overwhelming.
Fortunately there are a number of college financial aid schemes.
To ensure that you take advantage of all schemes, consider the following:
When your children are still in high schoo l- start researching
potential universities that offer college scholarships for freshman
students as well as financial aid programs funded by different organizations.
Narrow your search to two or three prospective colleges - contact
or visit their main office and request information on any college
scholarship or other financial aid programs
Ask for the cut-off dates for filing and submission of college
financial aid application forms
Impress upon your children the importance of a scholarship to help
with financing their college education and the options they will
have if they gain good high school scholastic records.
Motivate them to study harder and make good gradees - increasing
the chances of a good financial aid.
Consider filing an application for financial aid programs funded
by the Federal government. All state-owned colleges and universities
offer this kind of financial assistance to qualified and deserving
students. Submit the FAFSA (Free Application Form Student Aid) as
well as applying for scholarships and grants.
Ensure you complete all the FAFSA requirements - present statement
of bank accounts, monthly income records, present mortgage information,
etc.
Understand the rights or special advantages before accepting any
financial aid for your children. Also check if the financial aid
is renewable.
Gaining access to college education financial aid programs such
as college scholarships and federal grants provides greater assurance
your child can concentrate on their studies without the burden of
supporting themselves financially.
